The "Billy Joel / World of Warcraft," umm, mashup (?) that we've all been waiting for

12.3.10: When I watched this video, which is titled "World first World of Warcraft Lib Dub: We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel" [sic], I think I finally realized how fucking retarded World of Warcraft (WoW) really is. I know it seems strange that I didn't know this before, but I've always felt vaguely ambivalent towards the people of WoW. I basically just didn't care. I would hear stories about players pissing into bottles because they couldn't pull themselves off the computer for days at a time, South Park did a parody of it, fine, great, to each his own. Sure they're nerds, but aren't we all in some way? However, then I watched "World first World of Warcraft Lib Dub: We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel."

I like "We Didn't Start the Fire" because it seems like the worst Billy Joel song in a lot of ways, and I think people don't like Billy Joel specifically because of this song. I like this because it makes me feel superior to those people, knowing full well in my heart the true awesomeness of Billy Joel (regardless of the quality of this one particular song). On paper, I was excited for what this 'mashup' might entail. But it's just random speech bubbles with the lyrics planted somewhat in time with the song over the WoW characters' heads. It's really really boring. I suppose you could add "We Didn't Start the Fire" to any random video, with or without lyrics, and it would be 'something' because that is just such an odd thing to be doing in the first place. But I truly have no idea what the creator in this case was trying to accomplish. If this is something that is 'technically hard' to accomplish, well, ok. Good for you, I guess. I'm not one to judge the difficulty factor of placing 80s pop music lyrics into speech bubbles of WoW characters. My real 'beef' here I suppose is that the title purports that this is a "lip dub" and even via the loosest definition of what a "lip dub" is this surely isn't that.

So the reason that WoW is retarded is because it is impossible to assimiliate any part of it back into 'normal' culture in any kind of interesting way. If we did not realize this when Toyoto made that strange truck commercial with the WoW characters (a massive failure), then we certainly know now. We can all continue living our lives exactly as we had before. (Via The Daily What)
